The aim of this ROI pilot research was to inform the design of a future national ROI study. Instead of starting with the usual ROI relationship between investment and measurable economic outputs, the ROI pilot started with a learner-centered focus – by identifying what goals and outcomes from AFE matter most to adult learners.
Many adult learners from refugee backgrounds have had limited or interrupted access to formal education, which compounds the interrelated challenges of forced migration, including learning a new language, supporting their children in school, accessing healthcare and self-sustaining employment, and attaining economic mobility.
Beginning with the 2023-2024 school year, Briya began offering in-person, hybrid, and virtual classes. Offering all three modalities simultaneously presented the unique opportunity to examine staff and student experiences and outcomes across modalities.
The City of Boston Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development (OWD) conducted a research project that explored the journey from ABE to workforce training and post-secondary education, uncovering intricate barriers across socio-economic, educational, and systemic realms.
