Adult Literacy: A Critical Issue of Our Time
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We have just engaged in a national election and now turn our attention to the next administration. While our nation is divided on many issues, people and policy influencers across the aisle agree that adult literacy should and must be a priority.
In the United States today, 1 in 5 adults do not possess the foundational literacy skills needed to realize their goals and achieve social, economic, and civic well-being.
The importance of adult literacy cannot be overstated: foundational adult literacy skills are clearly linked to higher income, better health outcomes, stronger job prospects, greater civic participation, and improved language and literacy skills for the next generation. Literacy skills activate human potential. They give individuals the power to communicate, make informed decisions, and access resources and opportunities.
Adult and family literacy is one of the few issues today with bipartisan agreement, and the time is now for educators and advocates to elevate literacy as a critical issue of our time. Together, we are working to create stronger, more resilient communities through literacy.
The Adult Literacy and Learning Impact Network (ALL IN) is a collective, cross-sector initiative dedicated to expanding literacy access for adults and families nationwide, especially for those who need it most. We welcome you to be part of the solution.
Thank you,
The ALL IN Coordinating Council
